The Warehouse Climbing Centre in Gloucestershire invests £50k+ expanding its existing bouldering area to create an exciting 4400 sqft ‘Urban Boulder’ facility ready for launch late summer 2013.
The Warehouse Climbing Centre’s expansion of its top-floor bouldering area represents the next phase of a long-term refurbishment plan, which has seen this vast 5-storey Victorian warehouse transformed into Gloucestershire’s most exciting indoor climbing facility with an equally impressive loyal following.
The existing Bouldering area will increase in size by over 60%, utilising adjacent storage areas in the roof space to create multi-faceted complex bouldering walls. This summer’s transformation is being managed by specialist climbing wall designers and manufacturers – Rockworks – who have worked closely with The Warehouse’s management team to maximise the space.
“We wanted to expand our bouldering area to create an inspiring environment with a considerable range of challenges. As veteran climbers ourselves, the process has been a little self-indulgent, but if our members are as excited with the end result as we expect to be, we’ll all be very happy.” says co-owner Robert Stevens.
Warehouse Manager Jeremy Chapman explains – “As a sport, bouldering is basically low-level climbing without ropes. Its popularity at indoor climbing centres like The Warehouse is growing at a fast pace, with all kinds of people using them as a more social alternative to the gym. It’s been perceived as the safest way to do what many consider to be an extreme sport, in a relatively benign environment. You get the adrenalin rush, without the risk!”
Launching as ‘Urban Boulder at The Warehouse’ members young and old, veteran and novice will be able to take to the walls by early September this year.
